AUSTRALIA has every right to ensure appropriate biosecurity protocols are in place, especially when it comes to apples from New Zealand where fire blight is prevalent, according to Tasmanian Liberal Senator Richard Colbeck. Senator Colbeck’s comments came in response to complaints from New Zealand apple growers that Australian biosecurity protocols were “excessive”. “Within the first few weeks of the trade opening last August, a number of consignments were rejected,” Senator Colbeck said. “Given the potential severity of fire blight, it is important that Australia has stringent controls in place to protect our apple and pear industries.
