NSW Farmers today welcomed new dairy recommendations in the National Health and Medical Research Commission’s Australian Dietary Guidelines. The association’s CEO Matt Brand said the guidelines strengthen the evidence of the importance of dairy foods as part of a healthy diet which many Australians are missing out on. The guidelines indicate that higher intakes of dairy foods such as milk, yogurt and cheese are linked to reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, colorectal cancer and type 2 diabetes. Seven out of ten women and six out of ten men fail to get their minimum recommended dairy food intake. An estimated $2 billion in health care costs could be saved if Australians consumed the recommended amount of dairy foods. Increased intake of dairy products have been recommended for teens and adults as well as for women aged 51+ whose daily recommendations have doubled from 2 serves to 4 serves per day. Men 70+ have also had a big increase from 2 serves to 3.5 serves per day. Mr Brand said not only do these guidelines highlight the importance of the dairy industry to all Australians, they also highlight why we need to ensure the industry remains viable for dairy farmers. The guidelines have been released today under the Eat for Health banner and provide advice to health professionals, educators, food manufacturers, policy makers, food retailers and importantly consumers on healthy eating and wellbeing.
